Parents as Scholars
Maine has a Parents as Scholars (PaS) program that helps parents who are eligible for TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) and want to get a 2 or 4 year college degree. It provides assistance with child care, books, car repairs, mileage reimbursement, and other expenses, as well as monthly cash assistance. There are currently over 1,000 slots available in the program.
Maine Equal Justice has embarked on an outreach campaign to get the word out about the program. We are distributing posters to educational institutions and learning programs, CAP agencies, Head Start programs, libraries, career centers, adult education centers, and other entities throughout the state.
We believe that many adult learners who take advantage of your programs are likely to be eligible to move onto a college program through Parents as Scholars but may not be aware of it.
